Choral Ensembles

You will need to sing a traditional folk song or hymn of your choosing, a capella. You will also be asked to sing some basic warm-ups, sight sing, and do some tonal recall. If you are already auditioning as a music major, you do not need to prepare an additional folk song.

Instrumental Ensembles

You will be asked to perform a piece on your instrument that demonstrates the style and genre that you are most interested in performing. The piece should be between 2-4 minutes in length and should not need accompaniment.

Music Major

You will need to perform two contrasting pieces that represent your skill and experience with your instrument. If you are a vocalist, you are encouraged to have one of those pieces in a foreign language. An accompanist will be provided if needed, but you are welcome to bring your own if you choose.

You will also be expected to take a theory placement exam. You will be tested on fluency (a timed portion to identify note names, intervals, key signatures), aural skills (identify major and minor scales; major, minor or diminished triads, etc. by ear), and a written portion (write and identify major and minor scales, intervals, and triads). You will have the option to retake this when you return in June for orientation. The goal is to see whether or not you need of a preparatory class before you begin the music theory core.
