Alumni Spotlight: Alexis Griffin, Class of 2024

From Marine Corps service to academic achievement and entrepreneurship

University News | February 5, 2025

Alexis "Lexy" Griffin set foot on the Virginia Wesleyan University campus for the first time on her graduation day in December 2024. Walking across the stage at the Susan S. Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center, she proudly accepted her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology—a significant milestone achieved entirely through VWU Online.

Reflecting on the experience, Griffin shared how meaningful it was to connect in person with fellow graduates and professors during the commencement celebrations. Among those who had the greatest impact on her academic journey was Dr. Taryn Myers, professor of psychology.

“I was inspired to work in psychology by my desire to understand human behavior,” Griffin explained. “I want to use that knowledge to help others overcome challenges and improve their well-being.”

Originally from Meridian, Mississippi, and now residing in Elkton, Virginia, Griffin is more than just a scholar—she’s also an entrepreneur. In November 2024, she launched her own business, Griffin’s Garden Corporation. She credits her VWU education for playing a crucial role in her success.

“It provided me with valuable knowledge, skills, and discipline,” she said. “It helped me balance responsibilities, develop effective time management, and gain confidence in myself as a mother, student, and business owner.”

Griffin’s impressive journey also includes service in the U.S. Marine Corps, where she proudly served her country before pursuing higher education using the GI Bill. Now, she is taking the next step in her academic career by working toward a master’s degree in clinical herbalism, medicinal practices based on the use of plants and plant extracts to treat the whole patient, not just their symptoms.

“Lexy is an amazing human!” said Tina Milligan, director of alumni and parent engagement. “Getting to know her at commencement was an absolute pleasure. She has shown such dedication, both in her service to our country and in her academic pursuits. Her decision to pursue further education in clinical herbalism is truly inspiring.”

As a new member of the VWU Alumni Council, Griffin is eager to engage more closely with her alma mater and fellow alumni. Having completed her degree online, she is particularly excited about the in-person connections the Alumni Council will provide.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to join the Alumni Council at Virginia Wesleyan,” she said. “After my service in the Marine Corps, I struggled to find my place in civilian life. This opportunity gives me a renewed sense of camaraderie that I’ve been missing, and I look forward to the meaningful connections I will build along the way.”

With her unwavering determination and passion for learning, Lexy Griffin exemplifies the resilience and drive of VWU alumni. Her story serves as an inspiration for fellow graduates, proving that with dedication and support, anything is possible.
