Virginia Wesleyan Adopts “Test Optional” Admission

The only private, liberal arts institution in the Hampton Roads area, Virginia Wesleyan will now make admission decisions for top students without using the SAT or ACT score.

October 6, 2010

Virginia Wesleyan College, the only private, liberal arts institution in the Hampton Roads area, is changing its admission policy to welcome freshmen who are †stars†in the classroom, but do not perform well on standardized tests (SAT and ACT).

As of October 8, the College will offer test optional admission to prospective freshmen who present a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale and who have taken a strong, college preparatory curriculum in high school.

†These are some of the best students we see â€" superb in the classroom, but not necessarily super test takers,†said Dean of Admissions Patty Patten.à †We want to welcome those students into the college community and offer them financial aid and scholarships.â€

Research shows that high school GPA is by far the best predictor of college success, and a study of Virginia Wesleyan students follows this pattern.à †Students with a strong track record in high school know how to study, and that allows them to be successful in the college arena as well,†said Patten.

Virginia Wesleyan is one of only a few schools in Virginia, but of over 830 institutions in the nation to participate in test optional admission.

†With our new scholarship program and the new test optional admission policy, we hope students and their families will visit us during our first special fall visit on Monday, Oct. 11 to learn more about the spirit of innovation at Virginia Wesleyan.â€
