April Christman is an Assistant Professor of Social Work and Field Education Coordinator at Virginia Wesleyan University. She completed a Bachelor of Social Work at Virginia Wesleyan College and a Master of Social Work at Smith College School for Social Work. She became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2019 and was approved to serve as a clinical social work supervisor in Virginia in 2021. She became a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional in 2022. Her clinical expertise include depression, anxiety, stress management, grief, trauma, substance abuse, and suicide intervention. During her graduate studies, April served as an outpatient psychotherapist with Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center’s Creative Alternatives program and a grief counselor with Duke University’s Bereavement Center. Her postgraduate and licensed experience include serving as a clinical social worker at a psychiatric hospital, a licensed behavioral health therapist at an intensive outpatient substance abuse program, a mental health counselor at a university counseling center, and a Director of Counseling and Student Health at a private liberal arts university on the east coast. April’s research interests include genocidal and first responder trauma, clinical supervision, and mitigating suicidal crises.
