SALEM, Va. - The No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan Marlins were victorious in six-straight elimination games to earn the title of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Champs. The squad shut out Emory & Henry twice en route to the title crowning. Game one was taken 1-0 by the Marlins before handing the Wasps a 6-0 loss in the winner-take-all championship game.
GAME 1: VWU - 1 E&H - 0
All it took was one run to help the Marlins stave off elimination in the first game of the ODAC title contest. After leaving a runner stranded in each of the first three innings, VWU was finally able to plate one in the fourth. Katelyn Biando led the frame off with a single through the left side and was then moved to second as Jessica Lindsay was walked in the next at-bat. That brought up Julia Sinnett who sent a hard grounder through the left side that allowed Biando to reach home from second.
Hanna Hull pitched a beauty of a game, throwing all seven innings, fanning 10 batters. The sophomore allowed just a single hit, improving her record on the year to 30-2.
GAME 2: VWU - 6 E&H - 0
With the ODAC title on the line, the Marlins did not falter. VWU took advantage of a Wasp error in the opening inning to take an early 1-0 lead. One frame later, the Marlins were opportunistic again as the squad plated three more on Emory & Henry errors.
The scoring cooled off for the next to innings but in the bottom of the fifth, Lindsay clubbed a ball over the right field fence, tagging the Wasp pitcher for her first earned run of the afternoon. A Madison Glaubke RBI single in the sixth would then put the exclamation point on the victory.
Carla Hall (10-0) got the call in the circle for the Marlins and turned out an absolute gem. The freshman held E&H hitless through a complete game effort, striking out four along the way.
At the conlcusion of the Championship, Hull was crowned the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Hall, Lindsay, Howerin, Sinnett, Glaubke and Biando were all named to the All-Tournament Team as well.
This marks the 11th ODAC title in the program's history and the third in as many years. With the two wins today, the squad improves to 45-2 on the year and now will wait to see where it will go for the NCAA Division III Regionals.
