New Book Highlights Sustainability Leadership in Higher Education
VWU president edits latest volume in President2President series
University News | June 6, 2024
A new book edited by Virginia Wesleyan University President Scott D. Miller, “President to President: Sustainable Futures for Higher Education,” is offering a thoughtful examination of how sustainability and its many facets will continue to impact college campuses. This year’s President to President series includes firsthand insights from 10 college and university presidents who are paving the way to a more sustainable future through strategic, data-driven campus initiatives.
“The world is facing a global climate crisis,” says Dr. Miller. “Environmental ethics and sustainable human progress are priorities for today’s students, and they expect their campus to align with these values through responsible business practices and robust sustainability strategies. We’re also grappling with issues related to the long-term sustainability of higher education itself, as students and parents reconsider the value of a college degree and campuses face new and growing pressures from many directions.”
What started two decades ago as “President to President: Views on Technology in Higher Education” (Sungard) became “Presidential Perspectives” (Aramark Higher Education), and then starting in 2016-17, “President to President” (Sodexo). All the while, Dr. Miller has served as the executive editor of the popular thought series, an internationally distributed higher education leadership series written by college presidents for college presidents, and has resulted in 20 themed volumes.
Each chapter is authored by a notable thought leader whose institution is at the forefront of innovative philosophies and practices. One chapter is released each month electronically, and at the end of the series, the foreword and chapters are bound into a book and distributed to college and university presidents nationwide.
“I would like to thank this year’s authors for contributing their perspectives on these critical and timely topics,” says Dr. Miller. “The goal of President to President is to provide innovative ideas, fresh approaches, and practical strategies for addressing the many challenges modern college campuses encounter. We hope you find value in reading about the experiences of these esteemed higher education leaders and will join us for next year's President to President series, which will focus on current and future game changers in higher education.”
