Honoring Outstanding Student Workers

Recognizing excellence in student employment at inaugural ALL-STAR Awards

Today, Virginia Wesleyan University celebrated the exceptional contributions of its student employees during the inaugural Student Worker ALL-STAR Awards. Hosted by the Truist Lighthouse Center for Exploration and Discovery, the event recognized students who exemplify dedication, professionalism, and leadership across a range of campus roles. 

Clay Yokom supports chemistry and physics courses by preparing labs, managing chemical inventories, and training new student workers. Faculty call him indispensable, praising his exceptional organizational skills, strong academic performance, and independent work ethic. His quiet leadership and deep commitment to safety and precision have made a lasting impact on the sciences at VWU. 

Opeyemi (Opey) Kareen-Ojo serves as a Wesleyan Ambassador Coordinator, representing the University with enthusiasm and professionalism. His warm demeanor, leadership, and proactive approach make him a standout in admissions tours and special events. Known for balancing athletics, academics, and work with grace, Opey has left a lasting impression on visiting families and colleagues alike. 

Grace Harriman, also a Wesleyan Ambassador Coordinator, welcomes prospective students and guests with genuine warmth. A member of the Batten Honors College, Grace manages meetings, enforces professional standards, and ensures a seamless experience for campus visitors. Her leadership and commitment reflect the spirit of the VWU community. 

Kyla Robberecht has spent three years with Wesleyan Engaged, supporting service learning and civic engagement initiatives. From organizing volunteer fairs to designing creative outreach materials, Kyla is known for her empathy, initiative, and ability to connect students with meaningful opportunities. Her leadership has significantly increased student participation in community service. 

Liam Castellano, a Media and Communications major, was nominated three times for their work as a campus videographer. Known for producing engaging video content that elevates VWU’s social media presence, Liam combines professional polish with a youthful perspective that resonates with prospective students and families. Faculty have praised Liam’s creativity, work ethic, and vision, noting that Liam’s videos are not only memorable, but also transformative for the University’s digital storytelling. 

Mikayla (Kaza) Dayton has made her mark in the Batten Honors College as a coordinator and communications leader. She oversees social media, edits newsletters, organizes student activities, and plays a key role in recruitment. Kaza’s efforts have boosted BHC’s digital presence by more than 70% and strengthened campus-wide engagement. Her legacy will be felt long after she graduates early this spring. 

Rebecca (Becca) Haegele is a reliable and friendly presence at the Learning Center front desk. She helps manage the Testing Center, supports administrative tasks, and keeps the space organized. Balancing ROTC, esports, and a demanding academic schedule, Becca stands out for her professionalism, communication, and dedication to student support. 

Malcolm Brooks has worked in the Harbor Grill and Coastal Market for three years and is known as a dependable, uplifting team player. Often described as a “student supervisor,” Malcolm leads by example—always on time, willing to pick up extra shifts, and dedicated to supporting both his coworkers and fellow students. 

Isabella Martinez is a student library assistant who bridges academics and community engagement. In addition to helping with circulation and research support, she organizes events that draw students into the library space and foster a welcoming environment. Her leadership and initiative have created a more inclusive and vibrant library experience. 

Landon Rockwell, a familiar face in Boyd Dining Center, is known for her quick learning, reliability, and customer service skills. Whether running the register or training new staff, Landon consistently goes above and beyond. Her positive attitude and strong work ethic have left a lasting impression on both her peers and supervisors. 

These student workers embody the values and mission of Virginia Wesleyan University, contributing meaningfully to campus life while achieving academic success. Their roles are part of VWU’s Work and Learn Program (WLP), which offers students meaningful employment that aligns with their academic interests and helps offset the cost of their education. Though Work and Learn, students gain hands-on experience, build professional skills, and strengthen their engagement with the VWU community.
