VWU Capital Campaign "Transformation Now!" Successfully Concludes, Reaching $200 Million

Endowment Now at $120 Million, Ranks Top 10 Percent for Private Educational Institutions Nationwide

University News | September 5, 2023

Virginia Wesleyan University's ambitious capital campaign "Transformation Now!" has successfully concluded during the 2022-23 academic year, reaching contributions totaling $200 million. The announcement was made by Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of the University, during his ninth annual State of the University Address at TowneBank Arena in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.

Dr. Miller attributed the campaign's success to the unwavering support of donors, the Board of Trustees, and the advancement team. He stated, "Through the dedicated efforts of our supporters, we not only reached $200 million but also propelled the growth of our University. This accomplishment has significantly enhanced our academic programs, facilities, and overall learning environment."

A recent report by the National Association of College and University Business Officers revealed that VWU's endowment, now at $120 million, ranks among the top 10 percent of private educational institutions nationwide. This remarkable growth can be directly linked to the achievements of the capital campaign.

Dr. Miller highlighted the substantial expansion of The Excellence Fund, exemplifying the institution's commitment to academic and research excellence. The unrestricted resources from this fund empower Virginia Wesleyan University to embrace new opportunities, tackle challenges, and solidify its reputation as a center of knowledge and innovation. In the past year alone, $2.5 million was raised for The Excellence Fund.

Acknowledging exceptional efforts, Dr. Miller commended Brandon Elliott, who serves as Assistant Athletic Director for Advancement and Head Softball Coach. Elliott's dual role over the past 18 months has yielded impressive outcomes, raising $750,000 for vital capital improvements.

Dedicated endeavors and active participation from alumni have secured $500,000 to address program-specific needs. This funding is critical for supporting student-athlete resources, including equitable fitness and training equipment. Additionally, $50,000 has been raised for the Marlin Athletic Fund, a pivotal initiative that promotes excellence in both academics and athletics.

"Virginia Wesleyan, at 62 years old, is approximately 98 years younger than our comparison group," Dr. Miller said. "As such, our endowment is still a bit smaller than our peers, so we will now commence an endowment campaign soon to raise an additional $40 million for scholarships."
