Get Out the Vote, Marlins!
Begin by being registered, informed and ready for election day, November 6

Election day is Tuesday, November 6. Are you ready to exercise your right to vote?
According to the nonprofit “Votes Count,” one of the biggest reasons citizens don’t vote is because they don’t have all the information they need about when, where and how to vote.
At VWU, Wesleyan Engaged: Center for Civic Leadership and Service Learning and Hofheimer Library are working together to provide voter registration information and more. The process begins with making sure students, faculty and staff are aware of key information and are registered and ready for election day this fall.
They offer these tips:
- If you recently moved to the area, make sure that you are properly registered to vote in your assigned precinct. Check your voter registration status in the Commonwealth of Virginia by visiting the Virginia Department of Elections.
- To update your voter registration information, please visit Hofheimer Library or the Wesleyan Engaged Office (025 in the Jane P. Batten Student Center) as both locations have voter registration cards. Wesleyan Engaged will be forwarding forms to the Virginia Beach Voter Registration and Elections Office every three days. Forms may also be mailed or delivered personally to the Virginia Beach Voter Registration and Elections office at 2449 Princess Anne Road, Building 14, Virginia Beach, VA 23456.
- Those who wish to vote by absentee ballot can find information for requesting absentee ballots and voting for all states in both Hofheimer Library and the Wesleyan Engaged Office.
- Register now. The last day to register to vote in the Commonwealth of Virginia is Monday, October 15, by 5 p.m.
On election day, Tuesday, November 6, Wesleyan Engaged will be providing a shuttle service to Good Samaritan Church on Baker Road, the polling place for the VWU community.
Marlins Vote Promotes Volunteerism and More
Marlins Vote, an enterprise of Wesleyan Engaged and the University's campus election engagement initiative, promotes a three-point program that includes voter registration, issues education, and volunteer opportunities. A variety of academic and social activities are designed to encourage students and the broader campus community to become active participants in the electoral process at the local, state, and national level.
“Volunteers are needed to serve as election officials on election day,” says Director of Wesleyan Engaged Dr. Brian Kurisky. “Those interested are required to complete a three-hour training session and they will receive compensation for their work.” He notes that those attracted to this opportunity should visit the Wesleyan Engaged Office for more information.
Upcoming Presentations
VWU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Timothy O’Rourke presents “Singing a Freedom Song: Voting in A Minor,”on September 20 from noon – 1 p.m. in the Pearce Hospitality Suite in the Jane P. Batten Student Center. He will discuss the 1875 Supreme Court case of Virginia Minor which argued that the 14th Amendment gives women the right to vote.
Virginia Wesleyan Associate Professor of Political Science and Gender and Women’s Studies Dr. Leslie Caughell presents, “See Jane Run: Liberals and Conservatives Running for Office in 2018's "Year of the Woman," on September 27 from 11 a.m. – noon in Blocker Auditorium. She introduces the realities of women running for political office in 2018, including both the ways in which these women may benefit as a result of their gender and the ways in which their gender poses challenges.
