University News | February 2, 2024
On January 31, Dean of VWU Global Campus and Professor of Biology Dr. Deirdre Gonsalves-Jackson and Executive Director of the Virginia African American Cultural Center (VAACC) Tamar Smithers announced an exciting new venture: The VWU/VAACC Lecture Series “Unity in Knowledge.” During the Virtual Kick-off for the series, they shared information about the new partnership, its first lecture series, and how community members can get involved.
"We are immensely proud to partner with the Virginia African American Cultural Center," says Virginia Wesleyan University President Scott D. Miller. "Diversity, equity, and inclusion are embedded in the core values of VWU, making our campus uniquely suited to support the educational goals of the VAACC and its pursuit of knowledge, enlightenment, and tolerance. We are especially pleased to support the efforts of its Founder and Chair Amelia Ross-Hammond. Dr. Ross-Hammond has been a terrific friend of VWU and a trusted community leader."
“Unity in Knowledge” is designed to collect and present information about African American history and culture to the broader community.
"We want to cultivate and create partnerships to touch people throughout our community,” noted Smithers. “We hope this will be just the first of many exciting partnerships with Virginia Wesleyan University."
Seven lectures are scheduled for this first season of “Unity in Knowledge.” All presenters are distinguished members of the Virginia Wesleyan University faculty. The series runs from February 7 through May 1, on selected Wednesdays, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Dr. Gonsalves-Jackson will present the first event in the lecture series, “Using Diversity to Promote Diversity in STEM,” on February 7 on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University.
