What is your favorite BHC-related memory?
My favorite BHC outings are always the group trips to the national tours of Broadway shows at Chrysler Hall. My freshman year, we went to see Anastasia (which might just be my favorite show of all time), and this past fall we went to Wicked. Seeing Wicked in September was one of the first times I felt like I had found my community at Virginia Wesleyan and in the BHC.
What is your most significant takeaway from being a member of the Batten Honors College?
The Batten Honors College taught me that life and studies are interconnected. Though our honors courses may not be directly connected to our majors, they teach us that the world around us is made up of many parts that all rely on each other.
What is the most prominent skill that you have gained as a BHC student?
The most important skill I've learned as a BHC student is how to trust myself.
What advice would you offer to future Batten Honors College students?
My biggest piece of advice to incoming students is to take classes that you want to take and that you are excited about. I once had a boss who would say "I can't believe I get paid to do this." Find the classes and the programs of study where you can say, "I can't believe I get to study this." Music is that place for me. I love performing, but even the classes that are more difficult or "academic" are fun for me. I enjoyed taking music theory because I loved breaking down the elements of a piece and seeing how it fit together. I enjoyed taking music history courses because it gave me a chance to see how modern music evolved into what it is today. (And, as a bonus, there's a lot more motivation to go to class and put in the work when it's something you can get excited about.)
